How to Determine the Lighting Distance of a LED Growth Light for Plants?

The LED growth light for plants can affect the taste of vegetables or cannabis

The traditional view is that a plant's taste is solely determined by its genetic makeup and cannot be altered through cultivation techniques or environmental conditions. Light only affects a plant's form or yield. However, according to an experiment conducted by a group, this view may be incorrect. The group planted two groups of sweet basil, each using a different light formula, except for the spectrum, all other growth conditions were identical. After the same growth time, the two groups were harvested and evaluated based on different flavor dimensions, and the results showed significant differences. It turns out that by controlling the spectrum, growers can obtain their own unique products. Unfortunately, most of the plant lights on the market have preset spectrums at the time of manufacture, not to mention that different plant species require different optimal spectrums. Even different spectrums within the same plant can produce different products.

This means that fixed spectrum LED plant lights are not conducive to growers creating competitive products with differentiation. The adjustable spectrum function of our LED growth lamp for plants is designed to help growers cultivate differentiated products.

The appropriate lighting distance for the LED growth light for plants

When it comes to the installation distance of plant lights, many people will blurt out 30cm or 45cm. In fact, this statement is not rigorous. Each plant requires a different amount of care, which is generally measured by DLI (Daily Light Integral). It is converted to the familiar PPFD as follows:

DLI = mol/㎡/day

PPFD = umol/㎡/second

DLI = PPFD x 3600s x illumination time / 1000000

PPFD = DLI x 1000000/lighting hours/3600s

Therefore, to determine the installation distance of plant lights, it is necessary to know the DLI required for each growth stage of plants and the necessary lighting cycle.

Assuming a plant requires a DLI of 40 mol/㎡/day, and the illumination time per day must reach 12 hours, then its PPFD must reach: 925.92 umol/㎡/second = 40*1000000/12/3600. This means that the LED growth light for plants must be installed in a place where it can obtain 925.92 PPFD. If your plant light's PPFD is not high enough, the simplest way is to shorten the distance between the light and the plant to obtain higher PPFD.

This also means that the LED growth light for plants that is closer to the plant, the more concentrated the light (especially special spectra such as deep red), only a small part of the plant can absorb the special spectra, resulting in extreme spectrum imbalance. Therefore, constantly shortening the installation distance of the plant grow light cannot obtain infinite PPFD.

Foshan Feiliu Enterprise Management co.LTD full-spectrum LED growth lights with ALL-IN-ONE technology solves this problem, each LED chip can emit full-spectrum including white light, deep red, far-red, and ultraviolet, ensuring that each chip can obtain the same spectrum regardless of the distance adjustment. All parts. Based on this, we can obtain higher maximum PPFD than most LED plant growth lights.
